If memory serves, that sort of wasn't really all that common in medieval times anyway - for the most part weddings were arranged and thus more like business transactions or political deals, so both families stood to lose if it fell through. Faking the evidence would be more to prevent outsiders from creating scandals.

Plus with the high rates of miscarriages and infant mortality, it would be unlikely for any offspring from pre-marital dalliances would be much of a resource burden... which is thought to be the primary reason such customs evolved anyway (same reason why lions kill or chase off the offspring of other males - the lionesses enter heat sooner, and the pride's resources don't go to "
inferior"
genetic stock).

As I understand, it would be way more of a thing if the bride &
grooms families are hostile. It's common knowledge at this point that horse-riding is a factor.

If I am remembering my medieval history with any degree of accuracy, if the newly married couple was royal, there might be upwards of a couple dozen witnesses to the bedding, but I don't think the practice was common otherwise.

There was a common practice where couples were allowed to sleep together prior to marriage to 'test out the waters' so to speak. A couple was allowed to sleep in the same bed, but both were wrapped up in something similar to tight sleeping bags, a large board was placed between them, and the parents of the pair sat up watching them all night.

This always struck me as odd since 'bed fellows' were also common practice, where people slept with anything from their parents, children, or servants. The practice of sleeping alone is actually very modern.

Records from the period also had sleep split into two shifts. First sleep for four hours. Two hours of 'divine contemplation' (or sex). Then second sleep of four hours.

For those participating in the wedding rp thread, I intend to enter us into the final phase on Friday, so try to wrap up your conversations in there, or they will be interrupted by the bedding ceremony. Feel free to join in, though do keep your narration PG-13. :;

Need to come up with a way to handle this. I'd probably try to find someone I know in the crowd who could control the crowd and rush the two to the private room. Toward that end, I was thinking of having Yoren use Persuasion(having a septon try to get it moving along might seem off, but Yoren's a foreigner), but that might defeat any purpose for roleplaying the bedding ceremony Corrine or Ben might have planned beyond the lore purpose(the reason why the custom was established). So, unless it would be better for me to just store this nugget in the back of my character's mind, do you people got any ideas?

Heh, I did mean to just roll Awareness to notice his reaction, but I added Empathy and here we are.

RP of it is, for our part, going to be kept minimal (once the door closes behind them, that's it). The main point of having the start of it in there is because Ben &
I wanted to deal a bit with Ben's anxiety about his scars, and establishing a shift from anxiety to acceptance, marking them becoming a couple who stand in defiance of judgment. I certainly don't plan to dwell on details, so moving it along fast is fine. If Yoren (or anyone else) wants to join in, they are very welcome to do so. Smile

Hello all!

I will be getting some more offseason stuff moving in the coming week. This week has not been good, so I've been remiss in my posting duties.

In the meantime, please enjoy these videos I just took of my two African pygmy hedgehogs, Cecil &
Eowyn.

Just a quick thought - after this off-season we should probably be facing tougher challenges. We combat types are easily wiping the floor with our duels with Knights of Quality, on foot or on horse. It might be time to revisit the idea that Westeros doesn't scale with us - it can scale by having us face more opponents, or realistically tougher opponents. Or for that matter, don't let us pick our fights. Jousters get jumped while on foot, melee folks get gear stolen and have to fight for it back sans armor and/or with non-optimal weapons, etc.

I'm not saying we all need to fail, but this is Westeros...

Well, playing devil's advocate here: All of you combat types picked fighting 5, essentially ensuring that to make combat challenging to you, it'll be deadly for anyone else.

In a combat of mixed players, it's not hard to have mixed enemies, too.
I was more talking about personal story types of things where it has been solo-player, though.

Also with all this plate running around an average damage of 4 is not going to crack that nut. I'm thinking that we might need to start having you fight guards with pole arms just so that damage can make it through. Also with PC's ability to take injuries and wounds really makes for a challenge in dealing enough damage to put the PC's in danger. But I have a feeling that things will get more difficult as we go on. People with fight five will gain a reputation as being dangerous foes, think jamie lannister and the fact that he cut his way through many of king Rob's personal guard before being dragged down by sheer numbers. You guys tend to kill guards at the rate of one per round, in order to get off the more complex manuvers that can get through your 10 AR I think that 6 is the more likely number to get some damage coming into you. Or archers, archers are deadly from an ambush

In theory, this could be true for anyone who picked a combat stat as their biggest strength: Agility, Endurance, Marksmanship, and Cunning(in a pinch). Most PC fighters took 5 in Fighting, though. Some targets should have stats from abilities and/or equipment that encourage strategy. However, we shouldn't make it impossible to beat them directly, just unattractive(juggling injuries and wounds as a result).

There's quite a few things to be said for teamwork if one outnumbers the scary fighter, grappling to deny the use of fancy swords (and a -5 to their defense, that too) for example.

Yeah that is true. But even then you need the bodies to absorb the damage until the knight goes down

Archers tucked away in trees to take down the melee specialist, close combat to face our ranged guys. We all have weaknesses that are easily (and realisticly) challenged in our next scenario. The first story was a relatively harmless one (civility was important), now in the middle of a forest, god knows what will happen...

Speaking of which: How expensive would a group of guards be?

I would probably base it off of the personal guards and if a regular group is 100 and you want 25 I would reduce that cost to 1/4. But that is up to the reader of he wants us to be able to buy partial groups or not. Otherwise I would just go for the carde benefit of you want a group smaller then that
